RÖK N ROLL

RÖK N ROLL

ON/OFF was commisioned by the Gothenburg City Triennial to propose a week long “action” for the neighbourhood of Hammarkullen. Hammarkullen is a suburban neighbourhood from the 1970´s, composed of high rises and housing over 8000 people.
Continuing our research into food and cooking in public spcace we proposed to make a mobile fish smoker to explore the neighbourhood and smoke food with the inhabitants.
The smoker is composed of 2 objects. One is a smoking “tower” that also has a stone oven to bake food, and the second object is a “stair “ the allows you to access the top sections of the tower and also has a kitchen and wood storage underneath.
The smoke coming from the tower signalled to the public that we were cooking and people were expected to voluntarily join in the cooking and share recipes or techniques of preserving and curing food. We teamed up with Hoppet, a womens cooking organisation that employs vulnerable and long-term unemployed women in the suburbs, to prepare the menu, the food and the serving of the meals.
All cooking actions were done spontaneously and in public space.
