Young Collectives

With Assemble – a collective of radical architects – finding themselves on this year’s Turner Prize shortlist, a spotlight has been shone on such groups working within urbanism: how are they brought together and how do they orientate themselves in the process? How do they come to form a constellation in orbit around a collection of shared goals?
The nets cast by collectives can spread across whole cities, with a reach that sometimes even extends across whole continents. Such ways of working combine a multitude of voices. But rather than being problematic, the heterogeneity is the strength of such collectives.
What does it mean to be a collective today after the likes of Archigram and more recently raumlabor, EXYZT and Basurama? Alumni of these groups and currents members of Collectif ETC, ONOFF and Collective Disaster will discuss their precarious, but creative strategies with Joanne Pouzenc and Rosario Talevi.
